Stand up Brighton Grammar!

Congratulations to our First VIII rowers who have won the 153rd APS Heads of the River regatta and brought back the Fairbairn Cup to BGS.

The baton has now been passed from 1983 (the last and only time BGS has won this coveted cup and rowing premiership) to 2021. Since 1983, this has been our dream: our aspiration.

Captain of Boats and Stroke of the First VIII, Sam Wyss (Year 12), brought his crew home strongly to edge out St Kevin’s (2nd) and Scotch College (3rd).

Other crew members were: Hamish Roberts (Year 12), James Capp (Year 12), Ethan Calcatjicos (Year 12), Dougal Bland (Year 11), Jack Puise (Year 11), Zach Bowen (Year 11), Lucas Connell (Year 11) and Malachi Bakker (Coxswain, Year 10).

Students and staff from ELC to VCE, along with our Chair of School Council and rowing Old Boys, attended a special assembly to welcome the cup. Through a guard of honour by the Class of 2021 Year 12s, the Rowing team returned before a triumphant Captain of Boats Sam Wyss handed over the cup to Headmaster Ross Featherston.

Brighton Grammar School

Well done to all the rowers who competed at Nagambie, with most crews reaching the A finals. To the coaches and the boys who have been involved in the BGS Rowing program these past few years, and in particular to the coaching staff Oliver Dutton, First VIII Coach and Dick Bartlett, Director of Rowing, thank you for your relentless pursuit of this culture of excellence.
